Ｎ３ level kanji & さむらいロールの話

日本ではロールケーキが人気なんですが、そういえばヨーロッパではロールケーキってあまり見かけませんよね？私がフランスに住んでいたときも、ロールケーキがあったのは日本人が経営するケーキ屋さんだけでした。
"Roll cakes," or Swiss rolls in English, are pretty popular here. Great variety of roll cakes are available. But come to think of it,  I don't rarely see Swiss rolls at shops in Europe. I was living for three years in Paris, and as far as I knew, there was only one shop selling Swiss rolls in the city and the owner was Japanese.

最近食べたロールケーキです。名前はなんと、侍ロール。「侍」と漢字で書いてあるの、わかります？
Here's the roll cake I recently ate. It is called Samurai Roll! How cool! Can you see the kanji 侍（さむらい、samurai) marked on the cake?

ケーキの箱も面白いんですよ。「斬らねばならぬ　侍ロール」と書いてあって、侍が刀でケーキを切ろうとしています。この「斬る（きる）」は刀で人を切るときだけ使う漢字です。だから、この漢字は今では漫画や小説以外ではあまり使わないんですが、何といっても侍ですからね。

I really like the package design. （Sorry for this blurry photo.) A samurai is trying to cut a cake with sward, saying "Kiraneba naranu Samurai Roll" (I have to slash this Samurai Roll). This kanji “斬る”　means "to kill a person with a sward, " therefore, we don't see this kanji very often, except in manga and novels.　In this case, however,  “斬る”　fits the situation well, because it is a samurai...

味はもちろん、最高でした！
And the taste? It was superb!

ちなみに、本当の刀を持ち歩いていて、警察に見つかったら逮捕されますよ。たとえ偽物やおもちゃでも、尋問されるかも・・・。気をつけて！
By the way, if a police officer sees you walking around with a sward, you'll get arrested. Even if it is an imitation or a realistic toy you might be interrogated... Be careful!

最近ロシアからアクセスが増えているのはどうしてかな？でもロシアでも日本語を勉強してくれている人がいると思うと、うれしいです。

I'm wondering why the visitors from Russia are increasing these days. But thinking of Russian people studying Japanese delights me.

みなさんは「くまモン」を知っていますか？都道府県や町、村には「ゆるキャラ」と呼ばれるキャラクターがいて（いない所もあります）、キャラクターコンテストもあるのですが、熊本県のキャラクター「くまモン」は熊本県だけでなく、全国で人気なんですよ。
Do you know what Kumamon is? Almost all the prefectures and many cities and towns have created a mascot to promote the tourism or their local products. These mascots are generally called "yuru-kyara," and the yuru-kyara competition is annually held to decide which mascot is the cutest and most appealing. The most popular mascot of this year is definitely Kumamon, a mascot of Kumamoto Prefecture.  

くまモンはどこのイベントでも大人気。
Kumamon is enthusiastically welcomed almost like a star whenever he appears.The photo below is from the official web site of the Kumamoto Prefecture.  

くまモン商品もたくさん作られています。例えば、インスタントラーメン。

A lot of products using the Kumamon images are on the market, such as an instant ramen.

ちなみに、ゆるキャラの「ゆる」は形容詞の「ゆるい」です。本来は「締め付けがない、厳しくない」と意味ですが、この場合は「おもしろい、可愛い、素人っぽい」という意味で使われているようですね。
By the way, “yuru” of “yuru-kyara” comes from adjective “yurui,”　which originally means “loose, lax”. But in this case it seems to mean “cute, funny and unsophisticated in design.”
